Under its 2010 title "Living the Creative Economy in Europe", the annual European Cultural and Creative Industries Summit enters its third round in Brussels on June 22, 2010. More than 400 policy makers, intellectuals and entrepreneurs from all over Europe will meet in the Albert Hall to discuss which new approaches and institutions are necessary to represent the political needs of the European creative industries as part of a globalised world to make the European creative industries an indispensable part of the European agenda 2020.

The speakers include Reinhard Büscher (Head of Unit, Support for Innovation at the European Commission DG Enterprise and Industry), Xavier Troussard (Head of Unit, Culture Policy, Diversity and Intercultural), Markus Wagner (Founder and Chief Executive Officer, i5invest, an international incubator and start-up factory) and Faruk Malhan (Designer and Founder, Koleksiyon, a Turkish design an industry holding).

Professor Dieter Gorny, Artistic Director of the european centre for creative economy (ecce), an institute of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, and Chairman of the German Association of the Music Industry: "With the Green Paper, the EU Commission initiates a new political phase for cultural and creative industries. Parallel to this, ecce and the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 Essen for the Ruhr will launch the initiative 'European Creative Industries Policy Award' in co-operation with the DG Education and Culture and DG Competition of the European Commission. The award will aim at boosting outstanding creative urban strategies in cities and regions and thus contribute to the European future. To do this, ecce will start an open Europe-wide consultation process in co-operation with the EU Commission in autumn 2010 and participate in the Initiative for a European Alliance for Creative Industries."

The European creative and cultural industries sector is booming. Thanks to recent increases, the threshold of one million workers in the creative industries across Europe was exceeded. The creative industries generate 2.6 percent of gross domestic product in Europe and employ six million people. That's why it is high time to ask crucial questions: Why is creativity a model the whole of economy can build on in the future? In which way do our educational systems need to be adapted to prepare the ground for this? Those are the topics at the heart of the Annual European Cultural and Creative Industries Summit.

By promoting a multidimensional approach in the creative industries, which conceptually incorporates the areas of innovation, education, entrepreneurship, and urban development for the first time, the foundations for a political understanding will be laid and in turn allow for a consistent growth of the creative industries in Europe. The discussion of this development will be the main focus in Brussels.

The summit will not only look at and discuss the necessary political and strategic instruments but also reflect on best practices and real success stories – an eminently important task also for politicians and governments at present. Additionally, successful entrepreneurs will present their success stories and talk about the factors which had a share in them.

For the presentation of the summit‘s key themes, four panels featuring high-ranking experts from politics, economy and education are scheduled:

  • The creative industries in the context of the EU Strategy 2020
  • The creative industries as the drivers of European society
  • Reflection of real success stories in the European creative industries
  • The new institutional models of cooperation

Dieter Gorny will be giving the opening speech in Brussels on June 22 and welcome the international guests.
